If you’re looking to get hired:

One subconscious belief holds you back.

Have you ever followed career advice perfectly, yet still not achieved the results you expected? Maybe you started a workout plan on January 1, only to quit by February. You're not alone.

Early in my career, I interviewed for a training contract at a major U.S. law firm. After three back-to-back interviews and top scores, I felt confident. But I was rejected for not being a culture fit. I focused on what seemed best for my career, without considering what aligned with my personality.

Many people believe all advice works the same for everyone—but that's simply not true. Yes, blueprints matter, whether it's career advice, fitness plans, or wellness routines. But they apply differently to each person. And timing is key.

Many lawyers I've worked with struggle because they follow someone else's career path to the letter, not realizing that success isn't one-size-fits-all. Your goals, strengths, and circumstances are unique.

Here's what you can do:

  1. Filter the advice: Take what genuinely fits your specific goals and context. Discard the rest. Don't be afraid to personalize a strategy.

  2. Learn from others—but adapt: There's incredible value in learning from those who've walked the path, but the way they got there may not be the way you will.

  3. Focus on progress, not perfection: The right steps are rarely linear. Success often requires adjusting along the way. That's where a recruiter is invaluable.

This is how you'll create a career that feels right for you—not just one that looks good on paper.

If you’re looking to hire exceptional talent:

Now, let's shift gears and focus on what you can do to attract and retain top legal talent.

Not having this kills your culture.

What’s the common thread in the most productive meetings I’ve been part of? A clear, written agenda.

Think about it—meetings without an agenda often become long-winded discussions that could’ve been handled with a quick email or message. But when a meeting is necessary, a well-planned agenda ensures everyone’s time is respected.

I’ve seen law firms lose countless hours due to disorganized, agenda-less meetings. Imagine the time and energy your team could save by structuring meetings with clear objectives.

Here’s how I take control of meetings:

  1. Client meetings? Prepare and share an agenda at least 24 hours before the meeting. Include specific discussion points with time allocation, and any materials to review. This allows clients to come prepared.

  2. Internal team meetings? Agenda always. Keep the team focused and prevent rambling or miscommunication. I find short meetings work best—8, 12, or 24 minutes.

  3. Stay on track: A solid agenda provides structure, making sure all necessary voices are heard and decisions are made swiftly.

  4. No agenda, no meeting: For meetings that matter, a written agenda isn't just helpful—it's essential.

  5. Follow up: After each meeting, send a summary of key points discussed and action items. This ensures accountability and keeps everyone aligned.
